The Toll of Grief

In the glistening of the rising sun, you pray he comes to you.

You close your eyes and try to feel him but sadness is not easy to penetrate.

You move within the home you created together and it echos with emptiness.

The dog lifts his head with each breeze begging for him to come through the door.

And your mind keeps taking you back to the moment when you had to let go.

He is all around you, you keep telling yourself, but it doesn’t heal the ache in your heart.

For just one more minute, one more conversation, you would give anything.

And you know, it’s worse at night, when you lay there… alone.

You reflect back on your life together and sleep won’t come.

And you pray and you pray that he comes to you.

When you open your eyes you don’t remember how or when you closed them.

But the clock says that is was only an hour ago.

And the darkness of the night echoes the sadness of this new normal.

As you wonder.. how will I ever go on?

And you roll over and hug the pillow and the tears flow, burning your eyes closed again.

Until your body stirs from the cool breeze as morning breaks.

And the sun glistens on the water once again, and you pray he comes to you.

Until he does..

AFTER A WHILE

"After a while you learn
the subtle difference between
holding a hand and chaining a soul
and you learn
that love doesn’t mean leaning
and company doesn’t always mean security.
And you begin to learn
that kisses aren’t contracts
and presents aren’t promises
and you begin to accept your defeats
with your head up and your eyes ahead
with the grace of woman,
not the grief of a child
and you learn
to build all your roads on today
because tomorrow’s ground is
too uncertain for plans
and futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight.
After a while you learn
that even sunshine burns
if you get too much
so you plant your own garden
and decorate your own soul
instead of waiting for someone
to bring you flowers.
And you learn that you really can endure
you really are strong
you really do have worth
and you learn
and you learn
with every goodbye, you learn."
